Η εξαίρεση αυτή θα επέτρεπε να αυξηθούν θεαματικά οι παραγωγικές δυνατότητες και να επιταχυνθεί η αντίδραση στην πανδημία στις φτωχότερες χώρες, οι οποίες σε διαφορετική περίπτωση ενδέχεται να αναγκαστούν να περιμένουν χρόνια προτού φθάσουν επαρκείς ποσότητες δόσεων εμβολίων σ’ αυτές, εξήγησαν σε κοινή επιστολή τους προς τον αμερικανό πρόεδρο η οποία κοινοποιήθηκε σε μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης χθες.
«Ο πρόεδρος Μπάιντεν έχει δηλώσει πως κανένας μας δεν είναι ασφαλής ωσότου όλοι μας να είμαστε ασφαλείς, και τώρα, ενόψει G7, παρουσιάζεται μια ασύγκριτη ευκαιρία να διαδραματίσει τον ηγετικό ρόλο που μόνο οι ΗΠΑ μπορούν», επιχειρηματολόγησε ο Γκόρντον Μπράουν, ο πρώην πρωθυπουργός της Βρετανίας, αναφερόμενος στην επικείμενη σύνοδο της Ομάδας των Επτά πιο βιομηχανικά ανεπτυγμένων χωρών του κόσμου.
Στην επιστολή απευθύνεται η έκκληση στον κ. Μπάιντεν να ταχθεί υπέρ της πρότασης που κατέθεσαν η Νότια Αφρική και η Ινδία στον Παγκόσμιο Οργανισμό Εμπορίου (ΠΟΕ), η οποία προβλέπει την προσωρινή εξαίρεση των εμβολίων για τον νέο κορονοϊό και των θεραπειών για τη νόσο που προκαλεί, την COVID-19, από τους κανόνες για την πνευματική ιδιοκτησία.
Στο κείμενο τονίζεται πως, με τον τρέχοντα ρυθμό παραγωγής εμβολίων, οι περισσότερες φτωχές χώρες θα υποχρεωθούν να περιμένουν ως τουλάχιστον το 2024 προτού να είναι σε θέση να επιτύχουν μαζική ανοσοποίηση έναντι της COVID-19.
«Νέες μεταλλάξεις του ιού θα συνεχίσουν να στοιχίζουν ζωές και να πλήττουν τη διασυνδεδεμένη παγκόσμια οικονομία μας ωσότου οι πάντες, όλοι μας να έχουμε πρόσβαση σε ασφαλές και αποτελεσματικό εμβόλιο», εξήγησε ο νομπελίστας οικονομολόγος Τζόζεφ Στίγκλιτς.
Ανάμεσα στους υπογράφοντες και τις υπογράφουσες το κείμενο είναι ο Φρανσουά Ολάντ, o Μιχαήλ Γκορμπατσόφ, η Μέρι Ρόμπινσον, ο Φερνάντου Ενρίκε Καρντόζου, ο Χουάν Μανουέλ Σάντος και η Έλεν Τζόνσον-Σίρλιφ – αντίστοιχα οι πρώην πρόεδροι της Γαλλίας, της Ιρλανδίας, της Βραζιλίας, της Κολομβίας και της Λιβερίας – και η Έλεν Κλαρκ, η πρώην πρωθυπουργός της Νέας Ζηλανδίας.
Την πρωτοβουλία για την επιστολή και τον συντονισμό της ανέλαβε η People’s Vaccine Alliance («Συμμαχία των Λαών για τα Εμβόλια»), στην οποία έχουν ενταχθεί πάνω από 50 οργανώσεις και οργανισμοί.
